Leaving that important issue up to you, the consumer, here's a look at what some department stores and other big retailers have on sale Monday:
Kohl's
The retailer got some good publicity for its simple offer of 20 percent off everything, plus free shipping with no minimum purchase. In addition, deals promoted on theKohl's home page include a $9.99 pair of microfleece lounge pants and $90 for a six-bead sterling silver bracelet.
Macy's
Numerous clothing items and accessories are on sale, from Michael Kors handbags (various markdowns) to a Kenneth Cole Reaction peacoat at $70. Over in the furniture department, it's 10 percent off everything, from sofa's to dining sets and home-office items.
Target
Among the items Target is promoting today are $3.99 movies, and a $34 rolling carry-on bag from Rockland, with matching tote. A 40-inch Samsung TV gets a big markdown, but comes with a caveat that can serve as a reminder to all online shoppers: One reviewer gives the product an OK rating but says, "Though it has a lot of cool features, durability is not one of them ..." Whether you're perusing merchandise at Target or anywhere else, keep that old saying in mind, "Buyer beware."
Sears
Would your family (or a relative) be thrilled to have a "mini donut maker" or "mini cupcake maker" that sits on a countertop like a waffle iron? Sears offers either one at $20, down from $25. The multitude of other on-sale items ranges from clothing and furniture to a charming winter-scene rug marked down to $4.19 from $6.99. Sears makes it easy to shop the deals by price, brand, or department.
The list could go on, of course, not just with other big stores but also with deals at a wide range of niche retailers.
Eastern Mountain Sports, to cite just one example, offers sale prices on lots of its outdoor clothing and gear, all with free shipping.
Just the process of looking for deals might alert you to products you've never imagined, and never dreamed anyone else would imagine. At Buy.com, along with a lot of TV's, computers, and toys, you can get free shipping on a desk lamp that has a built-on fan. The kicker: It runs by plugging it into the USB port on a laptop computer. "Take your laptop anywhere and bring light and a gentle breeze with you," the website says on this $8.88 gizmo (marked down from $25).
Maybe that item, whether you buy or not, will lead you back to look at more of those high-tech gadgets and toys.
